Meet the Bearys: The Dream Team at Knapp

At Knapp Winery, we owe the success of our wines to two things–the land and the people. Tracey and Fred Beary are two very important people. Having dedicated years of their lives to the Finger Lakes wine scene, their connection to the land, the community, and each other is inspiring.

Tracey’s Journey from Farm to Vineyard

Tracey began her career at Knapp Winery in the 1980s, working for Doug Knapp himself. Born and raised in Seneca Falls in the heart of the Finger Lakes, Tracey embodies the spirit of the region. Managing her own 12-acre farm and family at home, she values self-sufficiency. An incredible chef, her food challenges the true meaning of farm-to-table cooking. Her intimate knowledge of the land is unmatched, and this expertise has been key for us here at Knapp. Her favorite task here at Knapp? Pruning the vines in the Winter.

Tracey’s admirable spirit and talents aren’t confined to agriculture. Once captain of Romulus NY’s very first varsity basketball team and member of the Romulus Choir (with which she travelled through Europe), she reminds us to live fiercely and try everything. There’s no better way to describe Tracey Beary than a force to be reckoned with.

Fred’s Legacy & Knack for Fixing Anything

Tracey’s husband, Fred, joined Knapp Winery a just a few years ago, though he’s been part of the family for much longer. He brings with him a wealth of experience, skill, and knowledge. Retired fire chief at the nuclear plant, Fred can do it all. From hunting & angling with his wife to working the fields here at Knapp, Fred is the go-to man to fix it all…though he laments the title when it’s time to fix the lawnmower. His excellence at working the vineyards during growing season is arguably the most important job at the winery––a job that impacts the growing season for 2-3 years to come.

Embodying the Spirit of FLX

The Bearys are not only passionate about winemaking, but also about the outdoors in general. Both are avid hunters and anglers, embracing a life that’s deeply connected to nature. They’ve built a beautiful life that celebrates the bounty of their surroundings.

Together, Tracey and Fred Beary are an integral part of the Knapp Winery family. Their dedication, knowledge, and passion for the land make them invaluable assets to the winery and beloved figures in the community. And though retirement seems to be on hold, we’re all the better for it.

Favorite Wines & Watering Holes

When the pair aren’t working their land or here at Knapp, they love a night out to enjoy the fruits of their labor. They both love Hector Wine Company, Red Brick Inn, and can often be found sharing a nightcap at Dewey’s–a beloved neighborhood pub in Seneca Falls.

Though their lives are rich with family, friends, hobbies, hard work, and impressive accomplishments, the Bearys just can’t seem to retire. And for that we’re infinitely grateful.
